He said Jehovah!
Someone asked me yesterday about whether blasphemy was the only unforgivable sin.. My initial thought was that if it is, then I'm screwed as I'm not known for polite conversation ;)
"And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."
Now if we are to take this verse and get meaning from it purely from our own context then it looks like it means that we can swear using the name Jesus Christ and get away with it by asking forgiveness, but if we swear using the Holy Spirit's name then we're screwed - even if we do ask for forgiveness..
Anyone else wanting some clarity here?
Back in the day (say, 2000 years) blasphemy didn't have the same meaning it does now. Blasphemy was deliberate, defiant sin against God and his decrees. So if we pan out and look at this part of Matthew 12 in context you can see that the pharisees were accusing Jesus of blasphemy in this defiant way - they were wholeheartedly, continually rejecting his ministry as validated by the Spirit (that's why Jesus talks about how you can't possibly be serving Satan and God at the same time). By attributing Jesus' power and ministry to Satan the pharisees were paying God the highest dishonour, and by rejecting the work of the Spirit in Jesus' day-to-day ministry, they were also rejecting his ultimate work in salvation. Jesus saw the pharisee's hearts and knew that they were hardened to him beyond the point of return.
"the verse is a solemn warning against persistent, deliberate rejection of the Spirit's call to salvation in Christ. Human unresponsiveness inevitably leads to a state of moral insensibility and to a confusion of moral issues wherein evil is embraced as though it were good... In such a frame of mind repentance is not possible to the hardened heart because the recognition of sin is no longer possible, and God's offer of mercy is in effect peremptorily refused." Ralph P. Martin
So, thinking that you've blasphemed against the Spirit and you're a bit worried about it? Don't stress, the fact that you're even thinking about it should tell you that you're still sensitive to his voice and leading.
Thus endeth clarification.
